August 6, 1926, Mendelssohn completed his Midsummer Night’s Dream overture (Op.21). He was 17. George Grove called it “the greatest marvel of early maturity that the world has ever seen in music”. But the story gets better… Mendelssohn accidentally left the score for the entire overture in a cab, and was able to rewrite every note from memory.

30th May 1990, Aussie rockers Midnight Oil delivered a message (well, more of a royal “up yours”) to oil company ‘Exxon’.
For 30 minutes they played from a flat bed truck parked out the front of Exxon’s headquarters in NYC. Their protest called for more clean up action after the company’s oil spill in Alaska’s Prince William Sound.
